Brewery Bags are grain bags that carried grain and malt used to make beer, upcycled into sturdy and stylish bucket and tote bags. Each design focuses on function and many are zero-waste bags, meaning they use every part of the original bag, contributing nothing to the landfill. As much as possible, the scraps from other designs are used for seam covers, pockets, zipper ends and strap anchors.
Brewery Bags were inspired by the good people at Footbridge Brewery in Boothbay Harbor, ME. They are committed to environmentally responsible practices and using locally sourced goods in their delicious beer and food. They had been looking for someone to make their used grain bags into something useful when one of their servers grabbed one to make a cross-body bag for herself, and a partnership was born.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve made things. I knit, I crochet, I sew, usually functional items. I think I’m more of a fabric carpenter than an artist. I love working with these grain bags because they are very sturdy and should have a long life, not just one use. They are a little tricky to work with because the fabric is not always flat, but the challenge is part of the fun.
